Volunteer Blog Post #2

  1. This time around I volunteered at the Humane Society in Bloomington. This is a local non-profit local shelter that finds homes for abused and unwanted pets. Overall I enjoyed this experience. I love working with animals and it felt good to help out.
  2. The major purpose for the participants at the Humane Society was mostly to care for the animals. Most of the volunteers took the dogs on walks, socialized with the cats and cleaned their rooms.
  3. The activities that I partook in went from walking the dogs and cleaning the cat rooms. The items I needed for the dogs was a leash and plastic bags, and for the cats I needed a scoop for the litter, and cleaning spray to wipe down surfaces. There were first aid kits behind the front desk in case of any bites or scratches. There were 10 different volunteers which were split up evenly between all of the jobs.
  4. There was a registration class that needed to be completed before the actual volunteering, as well as a waiver form that needed to be completed prior to working. I felt that there were several benefits working for the humane society. It was a good feeling knowing that you were helping these unwanted or possibly abused animals live comfortable lives. I’ve always found working with my hands rewarding. I would volunteer here again in the future, despite all of the requirements needed.
  5. I would not change anything regarding how this facility was run. Every person had their own job and everyone worked well together.
  6. Being outspoken and willing to go the extra mile works well in these volunteering situations. I don’t think the humane society is going to run into any problems in the future. There are always going to be unwanted animals, and there needs to be a place to take care of them.
